Why CBT+? Our Ethos
The DVSA requirement for CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) has been in existence since 1990 and despite going through some adjustment over the years, it has never been stipulated it should be completed in any particular timeframe. So why do we take 2 days to achieve what everyone else seems to achieve in just 1?

Our focus at BMW Rider Training is to ensure that all students get the best possible learning experience for them as an individual, and so we dedicate a great deal of attention to ensuring this 'first step' on any motorcycling journey sets each new rider up for success.

We have offered a number of course durations over the last 20 years, testing different approaches and carefully monitoring the results with our students. From this, we have honed it into the 2-day course we offer today, with three key elements for success.

  1. Firstly, we take 2 full days to ensure full understanding of not just what needs to be done, but why. By cementing the techniques learned with understanding and context at each stage, we're helping our students build layers of knowledge that make the next topic or action considerably easier to learn.
  2. We also hold firm to our small course group size; when training with us, courses are taught with a maximum of 2, even though the industry allows up to 4 students per instructor. In our experience, too many students on a course dilutes the training, and in some cases, the safety of the individuals on the course. By keeping training to just 2 students per instructor, we're able to given every individual the best balance of focused tuition and practice time over the 2-day course to grow new rider confidence and skill.
  3. Finally, unique to BMW Rider Training, we conduct the CBT on a BMW 310cc motorcycle. This gives the closest representation to a 'big bike' feel, whilst still being light and manageable for riders of all heights and experience levels. It makes a huge step forwards to the transition of larger bikes for any student wanting to go on to their full test.

This combination of elements gives every new rider a great foundation of skills and understanding to draw on, time to enjoy the learning and become better riders as a result.
